If your scalp gets dry, itchy, or uncomfortable, finding a leave-in conditioner that moisturizes your hair without leaving it feeling greasy or weighed down can be surprisingly difficult. I’ve been using the As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In Conditioner myself, and honestly, I’ve been impressed with it.
The first thing that stood out to me wasn’t even the moisture.
It smells really damn good.
But the scent isn’t the only reason I’ve kept using it. Here’s my honest review of the As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In Conditioner, including what I like about it, what it’s designed to do, and who I think should give it a shot.
What Is the As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In Conditioner?

The As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In Conditioner is an 8-ounce leave-in conditioner designed for dry and itchy scalp care while also moisturizing and improving the manageability of the hair.
The formula contains ingredients including olive oil, coconut oil, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, aloe vera, glycerin, betaine, and ceramides.
As I Am says the product is designed to moisturize the hair and scalp, make detangling easier, improve manageability, and prepare the hair for styling.
And importantly, this isn’t just marketed as a generic leave-in conditioner. It’s part of As I Am’s Dry & Itchy Scalp Care line.
My Experience With It
I’ve actually been using this product myself, which is why I wanted to review it.
My biggest takeaway?
This stuff feels good on the hair and scalp.
It gives my hair a noticeable feeling of moisture without making it feel like I’ve dumped a jar of grease on my head.
That’s important because there are plenty of hair products that technically moisturize your hair but leave you feeling like you need to wash your hands afterward.
This one doesn’t give me that experience.
And then there’s the smell.
I’m not going to pretend fragrance is some revolutionary hair-care ingredient.
It isn’t.
But if you’re someone who cares about how your hair smells throughout the day, this is one of the better-smelling leave-ins I’ve used.
The formula contains peppermint and tea tree oils along with fragrance, and I get a clean, fresh scent from it rather than something overwhelmingly sweet or artificial.
That’s honestly one of the reasons I enjoy reaching for it.
What I Like About It
1. It actually feels moisturizing
This is probably the biggest reason I’d recommend it.

As I Am reports that the product increased hair moisture by 71% after one use in its testing, while also reporting improvements in detangling and ease of combing.
Those are brand testing claims rather than independent clinical results, so I wouldn’t interpret them as a guarantee for everyone.
But they line up reasonably well with my personal experience: my hair feels more moisturized and manageable after using it.
2. The scent is excellent
This deserves its own section because I genuinely like the smell.
The formula includes peppermint oil, tea tree oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and fragrance.
To me, the overall effect is fresh and clean.
If you’re sensitive to scented products, obviously this is something to keep in mind. But personally, the scent is a major positive.
3. It makes styling easier
One of the official purposes of the product is to prepare hair for styling and improve manageability.
That’s particularly useful if you’re working with textured hair that needs moisture before you start manipulating it.
A leave-in shouldn’t be the entire hair-care routine, but having a product that makes your hair easier to work with is a pretty significant benefit.
4. It’s inexpensive
This is another thing I like about it.
As I Am currently lists the 8-ounce bottle for $9.99, while retailers such as Sally Beauty also list it around the same price.
That’s a pretty reasonable price for an 8-ounce leave-in.
You’re not having to spend $30-$40 just to find out whether a product works for you.
Who Is This Product For?
I’d particularly consider this product if you have:
- Dry hair
- A dry or uncomfortable-feeling scalp
- Curly or coily hair
- Hair that becomes difficult to detangle
- Hair that needs additional moisture before styling
- A tendency toward flaking
- A preference for lightweight leave-in products
The product is marketed for all hair types, and retailers specifically highlight its use for moisture, manageability, detangling, and dry/itchy scalp care.
How I Use It
The manufacturer’s directions say to apply it to clean, wet, detangled hair, distributing it from the roots through the ends before combing through and styling.
That’s also how I’d recommend approaching it.
You don’t need to absolutely drench your hair in product.
Start with a reasonable amount, work it through your hair, and see how your hair responds.
More product isn’t automatically more moisture.
That’s a lesson humanity has somehow failed to learn despite centuries of hair products.
What’s Actually In It?
The ingredient list includes:
- Aloe vera
- Glycerin
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Tea tree oil
- Peppermint oil
- Linseed extract
- Ceramide NG
- Piroctone olamine
- Conditioning agents
The complete ingredient list is available from As I Am’s product page.
The product is also marketed as free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, gluten, silicone, and artificial colors.
What I Don’t Like
No honest review should be entirely praise.
The biggest potential downside is that this isn’t necessarily the product I’d choose if you specifically want a completely fragrance-free leave-in.
It contains fragrance as well as essential oils such as peppermint and tea tree.
If your scalp is particularly sensitive to fragrances or essential oils, I’d patch test first and pay attention to how your scalp responds.
And if you’re dealing with persistent itching, flaking, irritation, or a diagnosed scalp condition, don’t assume a cosmetic product is going to solve the underlying problem. That’s where an actual healthcare professional beats a blog post, tragically.
Is As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In Conditioner Worth It?
For me, yes.
I like how it makes my hair feel.
I like the moisture.

I like how manageable my hair feels after using it.
And I really like the smell.
At around $10 for an 8-ounce bottle, I also think it’s a pretty easy product to try without making a huge commitment.
I wouldn’t call it a miracle product, and I wouldn’t tell somebody that it will magically eliminate every scalp problem.
But as a moisturizing leave-in conditioner that also fits into a dry-scalp-focused routine, I think As I Am did a damn good job with this one.
